Many aesthetic histories that are likely to be written about Black Panther. In this post, Prof. Burnett sheds light on the film’s “play” with forms we associate with popular cinema. More precisely, he celebrates one specific aspect of the film’s aesthetic–to explore how director-writer Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole act upon narrative strategies from the history of popular movie storytelling. Through this exploration, we come to appreciate a different side of Black Panther‘s intervention in our culture–its intervention in the aesthetic history of film.
